When Work Gets Political: Dealing With Employees’ Political Actions

Uber, Facebook, and Google have all recently been the subject of intense scrutiny recently because of their employees’ political activism and beliefs. From attending a controversial protest to issuing a manifesto about a company’s workplace environment, employees’ political proclivities can be a minefield for employers to navigate. Most employers don’t know if and how they should address these issues–and employers who do risk making matters worse with potential morale issues, legal disputes, and brand damage.

Stephen Hirschfeld will provide an overview of the potential political scenarios employers face and the impact of federal and state law on employers’ abilities to hold employees accountable for on- and off-duty behavior. Attendees will also learn the importance of getting your executive team and board aligned on related corporate philosophy and how to implement a code of conduct that accurately reflects your company’s values, complies with applicable law, and can be followed and enforced.

Building a Sense of Purpose to Improve Employee Productivity

What if instead of asking whether our employees are engaged, we asked if they are fulfilled? Would this increase productivity even further? Research shows that employees who feel fulfilled in their work and who work with a sense of purpose show much greater productivity, are better ambassadors of employers’ brands, and contribute more to employers’ bottom lines.

In this talk, Karen Stevens will examine the ways HR practitioners and business leaders can help influence employees’ sense of purpose, reward those who work with passion, and create an environment that encourages this work style. Karen will present theories she is investigating and share concrete experiences from her current experiments.

Dr. Robert Eyler

Dr. Robert Eyler is President of Economic Forensics and Analytics, specializing in public policy analysis for firms and governments. He is also Dean of the School of Extended and International Education and Professor of Economics at Sonoma State University. He earned a Ph.D. from the University of California, Davis and a B.A. in Economics at CSU, Chico. He is often called up by the media for his expertise, provides economic impact analyses for both private firms and public entities to help guide public policy, and acts as an expert witness and forensic economist in litigation. Robert has been a visiting scholar at both the University of Bologna and Stanford University. Robert is a Sonoma County native, and his family have been sheep and cattle ranchers in Marin and Sonoma counties since 1910.

Stephen Hirschfeld

Stephen Hirschfeld is a founding partner and co-managing partner with the law firm of Hirschfeld Kraemer LLP in San Francisco, California. He is also the CEO of the Employment Law Alliance (ELA), the world’s largest network of labor and employment lawyers.

Steve works with clients throughout the country in both the public and private sector, from Fortune 500 companies to small, privately-owned businesses. He advises executives, managers, and supervisors on day-to-day legal issues affecting the workplace, including employee discipline and terminations, union organizing, workforce reductions, discrimination claims, substance abuse, workplace privacy, and many other human resources issues. He has also tried to verdict over 100 cases before courts, arbitrators, administrative law judges and government agencies with a ‘win rate’ of over 90 percent.

Steve takes a proactive approach when advising clients, emphasizing creative solutions to employee relations problems. He routinely counsels management about ways to prevent costly and protracted litigation, teaching clients how to make sound human resource decisions while minimizing wrongful termination, discrimination, and sexual harassment claims.

Karen Stevens

Karen Stevens has a passion for building creative solutions and programs for talent strategy initiatives as well as for inspiring each employee in her organization to achieve great things in their own career.

She currently leads the Global Career Services and Career Transitions team for Accenture – which includes creating supportive programs and resources for Accenture’s 400,000 employees globally, as well as for over 400,000 Accenture Alumni. Her goal is to ensure that every Accenture employee and alum is working at the crossroads of their passion & talents and the needs of the business.

Prior to her current role, she played an integral role in supporting the growth of an early stage start-up into a leading provider of transition services and career management solutions where she built cutting-edge programs, practices, and products that have uniquely differentiated the company’s career transition offering in the market.

Karen is known for her ability to inspire and motivate teams to do their best work and make every employee feel special. She has a Master’s Degree in Psychology from Notre Dame de Namur University and holds several certifications, including SPHR, SHRM-SCP, Human Capital Strategist, and is a Gallup certified Strengths Coach. She is an advocate for progressive talent strategy and is currently Chairing the committee for the 2018 Global HRPS Conference.
