Christina Russo Recognized As Top Industry Professional

Nelson’s Vice President of Marketing, Christina Russo, was named to the Staffing Industry Analysts (SIA) 2018 list of the top 40 staffing industry professionals under the age of 40, for the second year in a row.

The global advisor on staffing and workforce solutions has unveiled its annual 40 Under 40 list, recognizing a unique set of leaders on the cutting-edge work in North America. Nelson’s Christina Russo is one of the influential individuals named to this year’s list, making her mark through innovation, efficiency, and diligence. The list is not a ranking but a recognition of talented professionals elevating the industry.

Christina joined Nelson as the youngest Executive team member in 2015 and has continued to foster company growth through innovative programs, processes, and initiatives. In addition to being included on SIA’s 2017 40 under 40 list, Christina was also named to SIA’s inaugural Top Millennials in Staffing list in 2016.

As a disruptive industry leader, Christina is constantly perusing innovative ways to challenge new markets. “It’s been fun to deep-dive into the HR tech world again and see what’s out there to help us push forward.” Christina says. “My current focus is on researching go-to-market strategies, buyer profiles and what it would take to reach the masses without adding more work to the desk of the recruiter.”

Nelson announced that it has been ranked 30 out of 100 on the San Francisco Times’ 2018 Bay Area Corporate Philanthropists List which was published in a San Francisco Business Times’ supplement on July 27, 2018.

The list recognized for-profit companies and non-profit health care organizations that made cash giving contributions to charitable organizations in the counties of San Francisco, San Mateo, Alameda, Contra Costa, Marin, Napa, Santa Clara, Solano, and Sonoma. Almost $350 billion were raised for charities in these counties by the top 100 corporate philanthropists on this list.

The staffing and recruiting company was named one of 37 companies among the top 100 that gave more than $1 million and ranked number 4 in cash giving per local employee by giving $6,751 per Nelson team member.

Nelson recently announced the launch of their beCAUSE philanthropy program, a corporate philanthropy program that offers a variety of options for non-profit organizations interested in obtaining support. The beCAUSE program was designed to continue Nelson’s long history of giving back to the community.

Nelson’s North Bay Area Manager, Mary Lynn Bartholomew, was one of 15 women recognized for the North Bay Business Journal’s Women in Business award for 2018. Since 2001, the Journal has awarded the top Women in Business in the counties of Sonoma, Napa, and Marin.

Joining Nelson’s management team in 2013, Mary Lynn has been crucial in supporting some of the staffing agency’s busiest offices in California. In addition to managing 3 of the Northern California’s largest Independent Staffing firm’s locations, Mary Lynn also executed a successful move and Open House for a new Petaluma location early this year.

Aside from managing client relationships and matching quality candidates with their next career move, Mary Lynn is a member of the Petaluma Chamber Board of Directors and an Executive Leadership member of the “Go Red for Women” committee for the American Heart Association.

Mary Lynn was recognized beside other recipients at the Women in Business Awards Dinner Gala on Thursday, June 28 at the Hyatt Regency Sonoma Wine Country in Santa Rosa.

“The nominations include those submitted by our readers, previous honorees and our editorial department. The achievements and contributions of the nominees made the selection process difficult. Winners were chosen based on many factors, including leadership roles in the organization, business-related innovations, vision and community involvement,” explains the Journal.

Nelson announced recently that it was once again voted best job placement service in the North Bay by readers of the NorthBay Biz in their 29th annual Readers Poll. This marks the 19th consecutive year Nelson has been a recipient of this award.

This year, more than 2,500 ballots were received containing 42,000 votes, allowing readers across the North Bay the opportunity to select their top choices for businesses and honorees in 37 different categories.

Nelson is pleased to share that our North Bay Regional Sales Manager, Floyd Given, has been named to the North Bay Business Journal’s 2018 40 Under 40 list. Each year, the NBBJ compiles this list of the region’s most influential young people in business. This list includes leaders, disruptors, and innovators – professionals paving the way for North Bay Businesses in an ever-changing and ever-growing economic climate.

Floyd Given brings accounting and finance, as well as general staffing, experience to his role as Nelson’s North Bay Regional Sales Manager. He oversees the day-to-day sales operations for Nelson’s four North Bay Offices (in Santa Rosa, Petaluma, San Rafael, and Napa).

Floyd has been with Nelson for four years. His colleagues tout his unique ability to secure long-lasting relationships with clients and co-workers. No stranger to accolades, Floyd has won several Nelson awards – including being named to our prestigious Chairman’s Club and President’s Club. Floyd is very connected in the community both professionally and personally – most notably as a member of PASCO and as coach of the San Francisco Junior Giants.

We caught up with Floyd in Santa Rosa after the “40 Under 40” award was announced to ask him a few questions about his role:

Q: What do you do at Nelson?
A: I started as an Account Executive in 2014 in Santa Rosa, where I generated new business and nurtured existing client relationships. In 2017, I was promoted to Regional Sales Manager. In this role, I oversee the day-to-day sales operations in the North Bay, helping Nelson’s four sales teams in the region close business, push sales forward, and optimize our relationships with current clients. I’m also responsible for the training and development of these teams.

Q: What are your biggest challenges in your role? Successes?
A: The biggest challenge I’ve experienced is being able to motivate my team and help them develop their skills by using a unique and customizable approach. I understand, and I’ve seen firsthand, how everyone learns in different ways and different paces – and adjusting my approach to foster the success of each member of my team is an ongoing, yet rewarding, challenge.
My greatest success is seeing the shared success of our business development teams. When those teams reach their professional and personal goals while exceeding their numbers, it’s a shared achievement.

Q: Did you always envision living/working in Sonoma County? What do you love about living/working here?
A: I am originally from Rohnert Park and went to college in Southern California. When I was younger, I didn’t know if I wanted to work and live in the North Bay forever. But after college, I found my way back to Sonoma County to be closer to family.
I love working and living in Sonoma County. It’s beautiful, there is a lot of business diversity, and I get to interact with some brilliant minds on a daily basis.

Q: What’s the best advice you’ve ever received that has helped you in your role or career?
A: Don’t treat people the way you want to be treated, treat them the way THEY want to be treated. Each person is unique and should be treated as such.

Q: What advice do you have for other young professionals just starting out (in sales, the staffing industry, or in general)? How can they follow in your footsteps to achieve success early in their careers?
A: Work hard, work smart, and develop yourself and those around you. Find a way to push yourself out of your comfort zone; get comfortable being uncomfortable.

Q: Just for fun, what was your first job? And if you could tell your 18-year-old-self one thing, what would it be?
A: My first job was in accounting for a manufacturing company. And take time to get to know those around you. Each person is unique, and you can learn something different from each one.

Chandra Pappas, Proven Staffing Industry Leader, Joins Nelson as Executive Vice President

Joe Madigan takes on CEO role after 13 devoted years with Nelson

Nelson, the largest independent staffing company in Northern California, announced today the promotion of Nelson Executive Vice President, Joe Madigan, to Chief Executive Officer. Madigan will assume CEO responsibilities for the Sonoma-headquartered workforce solutions industry leader effective January 1, 2018.

“I can’t think of anyone more qualified to lead the future of Nelson,” said Craig Nelson, Chairman of the Board. “Joe’s extensive experience in the staffing industry and with Nelson, combined with his passion for our business, clients, and community, exemplifies our core values. He also understands how to foster collaborative business relationships, which will continue to strengthen the company’s growth and brand awareness.”

Madigan has over 20 years of recruiting and networking experience in the Bay Area and over 13 years of experience with Nelson. He joined Nelson in 2004 as a Branch Manager of Nelson & Associates, the company’s finance and accounting specialty division. In eight years, he ascended the division’s leadership ranks and advanced to vice president. His long-term contributions to the company’s success and his forward-thinking leadership style in 2016, led to his most recent promotion to Executive Vice President.

Madigan brings his passion for giving back to the community to Nelson, leading the company’s partnership with Make-A-Wish Greater Bay Area. In 2017, under his leadership, Nelson expanded their support of the non-profit, becoming presenting sponsor of three Bay Area Walk for Wishes events and raising more than $30,000 to fund wishes for children facing life threatening conditions.

As Petaluma’s booming post-recession development paves the way for new residents and merchants, business owners are struggling to attract candidates to fill jobs across all sectors.

This week, Inc. magazine included Nelson on its 36th annual Inc. 5000 list, the most prestigious ranking of the nation’s fastest-growing private companies. Staffing Industry Analysts (SIA), the global advisor on staffing and workforce solutions, has released its 2017 report on the Largest Staffing Firms in the United States. Ranked by revenue, the report covers firms that generated at least $100 million in US staffing revenue in 2016. This is SIA’s 22nd annual report on the largest US staffing firms.

Nelson’s Executives Continue to Contribute to Staffing Industry Innovations

Nelson’s Vice President of Marketing, Christina Russo, was named to the Staffing Industry Analysts (SIA) 2017 list of the top 40 staffing industry professionals under the age of 40. The SIA, a global advisor on contingent work and workforce solutions, created this list to recognize the contributions of talented individuals who were born on or after July 1, 1977.

Christina is one of many Nelson executives who have been recognized for their unique contributions to the industry. Last year, Senior Vice President, Kelley Hartman, was named the North Bay Woman in Business award and Joe Prusko, Chief Financial Officer, was named to the North Bay Business Journal’s CFO recognition list.

“I am honored to be included in SIA’s 2017 list of top industry influencers under 40,” said Christina. “As the staffing industry evolves, this new generation of leaders will play crucial roles in ushering in innovation. Christina joined Nelson in 2015, when she became the youngest member of the company’s executive leadership team.
