Nelson Area Manager, Mary Lynn Bartholomew, Wins North Bay Business Journal Women in Business Award
Nelson’s North Bay Area Manager, Mary Lynn Bartholomew, was one of 15 women recognized for the North Bay Business Journal’s Women in Business award for 2018. Since 2001, the Journal has awarded the top Women in Business in the counties of Sonoma, Napa, and Marin.
Joining Nelson’s management team in 2013, Mary Lynn has been crucial in supporting some of the staffing agency’s busiest offices in California. In addition to managing 3 of the Northern California’s largest Independent Staffing firm’s locations, Mary Lynn also executed a successful move and Open House for a new Petaluma location early this year.
Aside from managing client relationships and matching quality candidates with their next career move, Mary Lynn is a member of the Petaluma Chamber Board of Directors and an Executive Leadership member of the “Go Red for Women” committee for the American Heart Association.
Mary Lynn was recognized beside other recipients at the Women in Business Awards Dinner Gala on Thursday, June 28 at the Hyatt Regency Sonoma Wine Country in Santa Rosa.
“The nominations include those submitted by our readers, previous honorees and our editorial department. The achievements and contributions of the nominees made the selection process difficult. Winners were chosen based on many factors, including leadership roles in the organization, business-related innovations, vision and community involvement,” explains the Journal.

Nelson announced recently that it was once again voted best job placement service in the North Bay by readers of the NorthBay Biz in their 29th annual Readers Poll. This marks the 19th consecutive year Nelson has been a recipient of this award.
This year, more than 2,500 ballots were received containing 42,000 votes, allowing readers across the North Bay the opportunity to select their top choices for businesses and honorees in 37 different categories.
“Nelson has a longstanding tradition of serving people and organizations in need, and we were thrilled to be recognized for these efforts among the top companies across the entire Bay Area,” said Joe Madigan, Nelson’s Chief Executive Officer. “Our track record speaks for itself. You don’t win an award this like this 19 years in a row without doing business the right way.”
An event to honor winners was held on May 17th at the Santa Rosa Golf and Country Club. Nelson was proud to attend alongside many other North Bay Business leaders.
The award winners are profiled in a special bonus issue of NorthBay Biz magazine; a complete list of winners is posted online.
In February, Nelson was proud to recently receive the 2017 Partnership Award from our partners at a multi-billion dollar entertainment company located in Los Gatos, CA for continuous service, flexibility in pricing models, and dedication to helping the company’s contingent team achieve their goals. Nelson’s 15 years of partnership with this company and reputation for providing a high level of impact while being a flexible supplier contributed to being selected for this award.
Ranked as one of the largest independent staffing firms in the United States by Staffing Industry Analysts last year, Nelson has experienced tremendous growth and recognition in the past several years. Our teams adeptly scale to fill high-volume and specialized talent needs of well-known companies while still providing the flexible, customizable workforce solutions characteristic of a nimble family-owned company.
“We were honored to receive this 2017 Partnership Award,” says Tony Bartenetti, Nelson’s President of Business Development and Strategic Partnerships. “Being recognized for the level of commitment and support that our team provides exemplifies the core values we uphold while dealing with any of our clients, from small start-ups and non-profits to Fortune 100 enterprises.”

Nelson is pleased to share that our North Bay Regional Sales Manager, Floyd Given, has been named to the North Bay Business Journal’s 2018 40 Under 40 list. Each year, the NBBJ compiles this list of the region’s most influential young people in business. This list includes leaders, disruptors, and innovators – professionals paving the way for North Bay Businesses in an ever-changing and ever-growing economic climate.
Floyd Given brings accounting and finance, as well as general staffing, experience to his role as Nelson’s North Bay Regional Sales Manager. He oversees the day-to-day sales operations for Nelson’s four North Bay Offices (in Santa Rosa, Petaluma, San Rafael, and Napa).
Floyd has been with Nelson for four years. His colleagues tout his unique ability to secure long-lasting relationships with clients and co-workers. No stranger to accolades, Floyd has won several Nelson awards – including being named to our prestigious Chairman’s Club and President’s Club. Floyd is very connected in the community both professionally and personally – most notably as a member of PASCO and as coach of the San Francisco Junior Giants.
“Floyd is professional in all that he does and is always willing to devote time to volunteering in the community. Those who work with him know that he is focused on providing outstanding service while building long lasting client relationships. He has deep roots in the community and has a bright career path in sight.” said Tony Bartenetti, President of Business Development and Strategic Partnerships at Nelson.
We caught up with Floyd in Santa Rosa after the “40 Under 40” award was announced to ask him a few questions about his role:
Q: What do you do at Nelson?
A: I started as an Account Executive in 2014 in Santa Rosa, where I generated new business and nurtured existing client relationships. In 2017, I was promoted to Regional Sales Manager. In this role, I oversee the day-to-day sales operations in the North Bay, helping Nelson’s four sales teams in the region close business, push sales forward, and optimize our relationships with current clients. I’m also responsible for the training and development of these teams.
Q: What are your biggest challenges in your role? Successes?
A: The biggest challenge I’ve experienced is being able to motivate my team and help them develop their skills by using a unique and customizable approach. I understand, and I’ve seen firsthand, how everyone learns in different ways and different paces – and adjusting my approach to foster the success of each member of my team is an ongoing, yet rewarding, challenge.
My greatest success is seeing the shared success of our business development teams. When those teams reach their professional and personal goals while exceeding their numbers, it’s a shared achievement.
Q: Did you always envision living/working in Sonoma County? What do you love about living/working here?
A: I am originally from Rohnert Park and went to college in Southern California. When I was younger, I didn’t know if I wanted to work and live in the North Bay forever. But after college, I found my way back to Sonoma County to be closer to family.
I love working and living in Sonoma County. It’s beautiful, there is a lot of business diversity, and I get to interact with some brilliant minds on a daily basis.
Q: What’s the best advice you’ve ever received that has helped you in your role or career?
A: Don’t treat people the way you want to be treated, treat them the way THEY want to be treated. Each person is unique and should be treated as such.
Q: What advice do you have for other young professionals just starting out (in sales, the staffing industry, or in general)? How can they follow in your footsteps to achieve success early in their careers?
A: Work hard, work smart, and develop yourself and those around you. Find a way to push yourself out of your comfort zone; get comfortable being uncomfortable.
Q: Just for fun, what was your first job? And if you could tell your 18-year-old-self one thing, what would it be?
A: My first job was in accounting for a manufacturing company. And take time to get to know those around you. Each person is unique, and you can learn something different from each one.
Floyd: From all your friends at Nelson, a very sincere congratulations on being named to this year’s 40 Under 40 list and for all you’ve achieved at Nelson!

“It’s an honor for me to step into this role at Nelson,” said Chandra. “I have admired this company and their reputation in the staffing industry. I am thrilled to have this opportunity to offer my expertise and leadership.”

She is known for her proven ability to build relationships with clients as well as her superior track record of developing top talent, increasing employee engagement, coaching leaders, and facilitating team building.
“Chandra brings a wealth of experience and success to her new role at Nelson at a time of great growth and opportunity,” said current Nelson EVP, Joe Madigan, who will become the Nelson CEO effective January 1, 2018. “I am excited to partner with Chandra and work together to lead our organization to even greater success.”
Joe Madigan takes on CEO role after 13 devoted years with Nelson
Nelson, the largest independent staffing company in Northern California, announced today the promotion of Nelson Executive Vice President, Joe Madigan, to Chief Executive Officer. Madigan will assume CEO responsibilities for the Sonoma-headquartered workforce solutions industry leader effective January 1, 2018.
“I can’t think of anyone more qualified to lead the future of Nelson,” said Craig Nelson, Chairman of the Board. “Joe’s extensive experience in the staffing industry and with Nelson, combined with his passion for our business, clients, and community, exemplifies our core values. He also understands how to foster collaborative business relationships, which will continue to strengthen the company’s growth and brand awareness.”
Madigan has over 20 years of recruiting and networking experience in the Bay Area and over 13 years of experience with Nelson. He joined Nelson in 2004 as a Branch Manager of Nelson & Associates, the company’s finance and accounting specialty division. In eight years, he ascended the division’s leadership ranks and advanced to vice president. His long-term contributions to the company’s success and his forward-thinking leadership style in 2016, led to his most recent promotion to Executive Vice President.
Madigan brings his passion for giving back to the community to Nelson, leading the company’s partnership with Make-A-Wish Greater Bay Area. In 2017, under his leadership, Nelson expanded their support of the non-profit, becoming presenting sponsor of three Bay Area Walk for Wishes events and raising more than $30,000 to fund wishes for children facing life threatening conditions.
“I am honored to have the opportunity to lead this tremendously innovative and philanthropic organization,” said Madigan. “Nelson’s company values align perfectly with what is important to me, both professionally and personally: providing exceptional service and making an impact in the community. I look forward to continuing to work with the Board and professionals at Nelson to help bolster the success of our company, our clients, and the talent we place.”
Current interim Nelson CEO, Jack Unroe, will reassume his previous position on the Nelson Family of Companies Board of Directors and assist with Madigan’s transition to CEO. “We’d like to sincerely thank Jack for serving as our interim CEO through the past 27 months,” said Craig Nelson. “His expertise and guidance have led us to an exciting position, and we look forward together with both Jack and Joe to chart a course for continued prosperity.”
Nelson’s staffing and recruiting teams truly understand the pulse of the employment industry. In the markets we serve, proactively addressing factors impacting employments trends is a priority.
That holds true for our involvement in Petaluma, where we’ve been working with businesses to serve their staffing needs for nearly 50 years.
When Petaluma local officials and economic experts started investigating the growing need to attract and retain employees, they turned to Nelson’s very own Mary Lynn Bartholomew, the area manager of Petaluma, to better understand the difficulties Petaluma employers are facing.
From the article (by Hannah Beausang, originally published August 28, 2017):
As Petaluma’s booming post-recession development paves the way for new residents and merchants, business owners are struggling to attract candidates to fill jobs across all sectors.
Local officials and economic experts attribute the issue to a complex web of factors, including the city’s low unemployment rate, skyrocketing housing costs and a lack of a specialized educational foundation to prepare the next generation of workers.
“It’s a big issue,” Economic Development Manager Ingrid Alverde said.

For the second year in a row, Nelson appears on the Inc. 5000 list
This week, Inc. magazine included Nelson on its 36th annual Inc. 5000 list, the most prestigious ranking of the nation’s fastest-growing private companies. The list represents a unique look at the most successful companies within the American economy’s most dynamic segment- its independent small businesses. Companies such as Microsoft, Dell, Domino’s Pizza, Pandora, Timberland, LinkedIn, Yelp, Zillow, and many other well-known names gained their first national exposure as honorees of the Inc. 5000.
With a 55% growth rate, Nelson has capitalized on its strong community ties and relationships to foster success. Out of the nearly seven million private companies driving the economy every day, only a small portion have demonstrated remarkably consistent high growth like Nelson for two years in a row. Nelson is now officially ranked amoung top up and coming companies such as SkillSurvey, Gametime, FabFitFun, InfoScout, The Fruit Guys, Mod Pizza, and more.
“The Inc. 5000 is the most persuasive evidence I know that the American Dream is still alive,” says Inc. President and Editor-In-Chief Eric Schurenberg. “The founders and CEOs of the Inc. 5000 tell us they think determination, risk taking, and vision were the keys to their success, and I believe them.”
This unique accomplishment is truly worth celebrating. The annual Inc. 5000 event honoring all the companies on the list will be held from October 10 through 12, 2017 at the JW Marriott Desert Springs Resort & Spa in Palm Desert, CA. Speakers include some of the greatest entrepreneurs of this and past generations, such as former Ford president Alan Mullaly, FUBU CEO and founder and “Shark Tank” star Daymond John, Dollar Shave Club founder Michael Dubin, researcher and #1 New York Times bestseller Brené Brown, and Gravity Payments’ founder and CEO Dan Price.
“We are positive about the exponential growth that Nelson has been experiencing in the last couple of years,” said Chairman of the Board, Craig Nelson. “We have been driven by growing our business and remaining true to our values for almost 50 years and this recognition reflects our successful journey as a family owned company that is now one of the largest independent staffing firms in the United States.”
Complete results of the Inc. 5000, including company profiles and an interactive database that can be sorted by industry, region, and other criteria, can be found here.
Nelson has been named one of the largest staffing firms in the US by SIA.
Staffing Industry Analysts (SIA), the global advisor on staffing and workforce solutions, has released its 2017 report on the Largest Staffing Firms in the United States. Ranked by revenue, the report covers firms that generated at least $100 million in US staffing revenue in 2016. This is SIA’s 22nd annual report on the largest US staffing firms.
Nelson is proud to announce ranking 89 on this list, as the company continues to experience growth and national recognition. Last year, Inc. magazine included Nelson on its 35th annual prestigious ranking of the nation’s fasting-growing private companies and Nelson has only continued to grow since.
“This report showcases those companies who have grown their business to the top of the industry in terms of revenue and growth,” said Barry Asin, President of SIA. “The 144 companies comprising the list generated a combined revenue of $80.0 billion in 2016 and their success illustrates the continued growth and adoption of staffing in the US.”
As Nelson continues to grow, the company remains focused on working with organizations of all types and sizes across all industries. “How we do business will always be guided by our principles and values,” said Craig Nelson, Chairman of the Board at Nelson. The staffing company is known for strengthening the next generation of quality talent but also strengthening the communities around them.

Nelson’s Executives Continue to Contribute to Staffing Industry Innovations
Nelson’s Vice President of Marketing, Christina Russo, was named to the Staffing Industry Analysts (SIA) 2017 list of the top 40 staffing industry professionals under the age of 40. The SIA, a global advisor on contingent work and workforce solutions, created this list to recognize the contributions of talented individuals who were born on or after July 1, 1977.
Christina is one of many Nelson executives who have been recognized for their unique contributions to the industry. Last year, Senior Vice President, Kelley Hartman, was named the North Bay Woman in Business award and Joe Prusko, Chief Financial Officer, was named to the North Bay Business Journal’s CFO recognition list.
“I am honored to be included in SIA’s 2017 list of top industry influencers under 40,” said Christina. “As the staffing industry evolves, this new generation of leaders will play crucial roles in ushering in innovation. To be recognized alongside my colleagues for our contributions is a true honor.”
Christina joined Nelson in 2015, when she became the youngest member of the company’s executive leadership team. The programs, processes, and initiatives she has implemented since joining the company have been instrumental in fostering Nelson’s recent growth. Last year, Christina was also named to SIA’s inaugural 2016 Top Millennials in Staffing list.
“This list showed us that there were so many rising luminaries that should have their achievements chronicled,” said Subadhra Sriram, publisher and editor at Staffing Industry Analysts. “We listened and changed. The 40 Under 40 list takes the place of the Millennials in Staffing list and is our way to recognize more stars in the workforce solutions ecosystem.”
The SIA will celebrate the achievements of the list members, including Christina, at an event later this year. To see the full Staffing 40 Under 40 list, please visit www.staffingindustry.com
