Since 1904, the American Lung Association has been fighting lung disease through education, community service, advocacy and research. Lung disease -- including asthma, emphysema, and lung cancer -- is the third leading cause of death in America. The American Lung Association of California (ALAC) and its offices statewide, work to prevent lung disease and promote lung health. Our vision of a world free from lung disease drives our efforts to find more effective treatments and possibly even cures for the millions of Californians who suffer from breathing disorders. We are leaders in the work on tobacco prevention and cessation, and maintain a strong focus on air pollution, which continues to be a serious public health threat.
