Company Profile

Founded in 1896, The American Academy of Ophthalmology Academy evolved as part of the American Academy of Ophthalmology and Otolaryngology (AAOO) in Minnesota. Its purpose was to provide continuing education to eye, ear, nose and throat doctors. By 1912, AAOO became the largest specialty society in the United States.
In 1979, the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO) was incorporated as an independent not-for-profit organization when AAOO divided into separate specialty organizations. During the same year, AAO relocated its offices to San Francisco’s renowned Fillmore Street district and merged with Washington DC’s American Association of Ophthalmology. It also earned the distinguished honor of becoming the first and only specialty society to receive the Federal Trade Commission’s favorable advisory opinion for its Code of Ethics.
Due to expansion needs, the organization’s offices were moved to the scenic North Beach area, where it eventually took ownership of its Beach Street location. Over the past 25 plus years, the AAO Board of Directors and Staff have continued to cultivate the organization into the largest national membership association of Eye M.D.’s and has extended its membership services overseas -currently serving over 25,000 members worldwide.
